Dual Degree Programme in Bachelor of Engineering in Financial Technology (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Bachelor of Science in Financial Mathematics (Peking University)
香港中文大學金融科技學工程學士及北京大學金融數學理學學士雙學位課程
Two Bachelor’s degrees, namely, Bachelor of Engineering in Financial Technology and Bachelor of Science in Financial Mathematics, issued by CUHK and PKU respectively, will be awarded to students upon completion of study. Students may apply for the dual degree programme after they have completed registration to the CUHK Bachelor of Engineering Programme in Financial Technology (JS4428) upon accepting their JUPAS admission offers.
Students accepted into the dual degree programme will spend the first two years at PKU and the third and fourth years at CUHK. Local students will pay only the local CUHK tuition fees for the whole 4-year study period.
BACKGROUND
Home » Programmes » Dual Degree Programme (PKU)
Starting from the academic year of 2019-2020, Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) offers a dual degree programme (DDP) together with Department of Financial Mathematics (FMA), Peking University (PKU). Under this framework, students of this programme will obtain Bachelor degree of Engineering in Financial Technology offered by CUHK and Bachelor degree of Science in Financial Mathematics offered by PKU upon completion of the graduation requirements of the concerned programmes.
PKU has been a CUHK partner for student exchange since 2003 and has collaborated with many CUHK units on student training and research. Founded in 1898, PKU is the oldest higher education institution in China. It is a comprehensive and national key university which has been consistently ranked as the top academic institution in China, embracing diverse branches of learning such as basic and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, sciences of medicine, management, and education. It is among the most selective universities for undergraduate admissions in China. It is a Class A institution under the national Double-First Class University (雙一流大學) programme.
The School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), PKU, under which FMA operates, has long been proud of its strong faculty team and excellent students. Among 119 regular academic staff, there are 7 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 11 Cheung Kong Scholar awardees (長江學者), and 24 National Distinguished Scholar awardees (國家傑出青年學者). It also attracts the most outstanding students, especially young mathematics talents, from all over China every year. SMS is widely deemed as the most prestigious research and education institution in mathematical sciences in China.
The CUHK Programme emphasizes on the education of essential knowledge and capabilities to apply technological innovations to financial services. The PKU Programme focuses on the study of quantitative modelling and analysis in financial and actuarial sciences. Combining the strengths of the two programmes, students participating in the DDP will benefit from rigorous training in both mathematics and engineering. That will significantly enhance the competitiveness of graduates from the proposed DDP, as the practice of modern finance puts great demands on talents equipped with analytical and technological abilities. The DDP also helps students widen their horizon through immersing in a different learning environment.
STUDY PLAN AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

All the students of the DDP are required to take mathematical foundation courses at PKU in the first two years, and study in CUHK in the third and fourth years to finish FinTech-related course requirements.
The graduation requirements of the two degrees programmes offered by CUHK and PKU for students participating in the DDP are summarized in the following table.
Requirements | CUHK – BENG in FinTech | PKU – BS in FMA* | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
CUHK students | PKU students | CUHK students | PKU students | |
No. of units to be taken at CUHK | 74-75 units | 61-62 units | 74-75 units (43 units will be recognized by PKU for fulfilment of graduation requirements) | 61-62 units (43 units will be recognized by PKU for fulfilment of graduation requirements) |
No. of units to be completed at PKU | 91 units (35 units will be recognized by CUHK for fulfilment of graduation requirements) | 91 units (35 units will be recognized by CUHK for fulfilment of graduation requirements) | 91 units | 91 units |
Total units taken under DDP | 165-166 units | 152-153 units | 165-166 units | 152-153 units |
Minimum units for graduation | 84 CUHK units | 69 CUHK units | 134 PKU units | 134 PKU units |
* A one-unit course at PKU is generally comparable to a one-unit course at CUHK.
ADMISSION

Students of the 4-year Bachelor of Engineering Programme in FinTech are eligible for application for the DDP. The programme will not be made available to advanced-standing students, senior-year entrants, or students admitted to CUHK through the National Colleges and Universities Enrolment System (全国普通高校统一招生计划). Up to two students from CUHK and two students from PKU will be selected for each intake.
CUHK applicants should meet the following requirements:
For JUPAS applicants, they must have achieved 5* or above in Mathematics (compulsory part) or Mathematics Module 1 (Calculus & Statistics) or Mathematics Module 2 (Algebra & Calculus). For Non-JUPAS applicants with international qualifications, they must have achieved excellence in their mathematics subject. Furthermore, the applicant must be a Hong Kong resident who is eligible for applying 港澳居民來往內地通行證 (also known as 回鄉證) and studied in a Hong Kong middle school.
A joint selection committee consisting of representatives from both universities will be established to shortlist and interview students who want to join the DDP. For CUHK FinTech Major students who want to participate in the DDP, they will be interviewed by the joint selection committee in mid-August after they are formally registered as CUHK students. The interview with PKU students for the DDP will be scheduled with PKU.
TUITION AND FEES
